Male Initiation and music among the Bijagós of Guinea Bissau
I conducted research on the Island of Bubaque, Archipelago of the Bijagós, Guinea Bissau, from 1994 to 1998, focusing on the social construction of manhood. My dissertation (“Initiation and music among the Bijagós of Guinea Bissau”) highlighted the relevance of musical and performative elements in the construction of manhood. The thesis obtained the classification of 110/110 cum laude and a special mention from the University of Turin.
